Carpentry and Furniture Making Services

at the Consuelo Life Skills Center for Children

Forty percent of the Philippine population is children. Of this forty percent, 68% complete elementary level school; 42% will finish high school, 21% will pursue college and only 6% will eventually graduate. There are several reasons for this, but nonetheless, employers still expect a level of scholastic achievement even for simple jobs. But for children in conflict with the law (CICL), the scenario is far more difficult. Before the enactment of RA 9344, apprehended children were directly imprisoned and forced to drop out of school. A majority of these children never go back to formal school because they are too old when released from jail, or are seen as tainted by employers due to their criminal history.

The aim of CFSPIs Vocational Training Program at the Consuelo Life Skills Center for Children, is to increase the competencies of children at risk and CICL to improve their employment opportunities and their ability to contribute productively in the community.

Our goal is: "A short term vocational training program that will prepare children and youth for careers or profession in which they can participate"

Participants of our vocational training program receive theoretical and practical carpentry and furniture making skills. The youth are equipped with functional carpentry skills, positive attitudes, and relevant knowledge specific to practical carpentry and furniture making work. They also complete a series of life skills sessions which prepare the youth for the real life challenges of being part of the labor sector, and life in general.

After undergoing seven months of training, the trainees who have successfully graduated from the 6 month training course are placed in the CFSPI-managed Carpentry Shop for at least 2 months. During this "on the job" period, the graduates work on actual products ordered by customers of CFSPI under the supervision of a skilled carpenter before undergoing a trade test.

The opportunity for long term employment or placement is then arranged with the CFSPI-partner wood working shops based on their needs for skilled workers. The trained youth are also organized to form CFSPI's Young Carpenter’s Group which work for CFSPI-managed carpentry and furniture business or even linked to work opportunities in the community. The trainees also accept individual carpentry or furniture making work on their own and can use the workshop facility of CFSPI but with a minimal fee for utilities.
